To ensure your experience at Rainbow Mountain is warm and safe against the freezing high-altitude winds, we strictly recommend dressing in a thermal layer system, including a breathable base layer, a fleece jacket or sweater, and a windproof, waterproof jacket. It is mandatory to carry your original ID or passport to clear local checkpoints on the route to Rainbow Mountain, as well as cash in Soles for the direct payment of the community entrance ticket or in case you wish to hire an optional horse service led by local muleteers. As for the ideal footwear to maintain firm footing at Rainbow Mountain, trekking shoes or hiking boots with good traction that protect your ankles against loose dirt are essential. To protect your skin from extreme high-altitude solar radiation, make sure to apply high-coverage sunscreen, lip balm, UV-filter sunglasses, a thermal hat or Andean chullo, and warm gloves. Finally, pack water in your daypack to stay hydrated, coca candies or chocolates for quick energy, and a pair of trekking poles that will provide great support during the ascent and descent.

Our high-mountain adventure begins early in the morning. Between 4:00 AM and 4:30 AM, LUX ANDES CUSCO private transport will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco. We will set off on a nearly two-hour journey south to the picturesque town of Cusipata, where we will make a comforting stop to enjoy a delicious breakfast that will boost your energy.
We will continue in our transport along an Andean dirt road for an additional hour until reaching the trailhead at Phulawasipata (4,600 m.a.s.l. / 15,091 ft). Following a brief safety briefing and recommendations from our guide, we will begin the uphill hike through the high Andean valley, surrounded by alpacas and llamas.
Following free time at the summit, we will begin the descent back to the trailhead (approximately 1 hour), where our transport will be waiting to take us back to Cusipata to enjoy a delicious buffet lunch. Finally, we will return to Cusco, dropping you off near the Plaza de Armas around 4:30 PM to 5:00 PM.

t is a moderate to demanding hike. Although the distance is not extremely long (approximately 3 km / 1.8 mi uphill), the key factor is the high altitude of 5,036 m.a.s.l. / 16,522 ft, where oxygen pressure is lower. Walking slowly, maintaining a steady breathing rhythm, and having acclimatized for at least two days in Cusco are the essential keys to reaching the summit smoothly.
Yes, absolutely! Local community members offer saddle horse rentals along the first half of the trail. You can hire this service at the trailhead or midway through the route if you need assistance. Please note that the horses will carry you up to about 10 to 15 minutes before the final viewpoint, so the last section of stairs must always be completed on foot.
The best time is during the dry season in the Andes, which runs from April to October. During this period, days are very sunny, skies remain clear, and the mountain’s colors display their maximum brightness and contrast.
